A 'gentle C-section' with twins

When Daniela Sanders learned at 35 weeks pregnant that she’d be delivering her twins via C-section (one was breach), her first thought was “this is going to mess up breastfeeding.”

For Daniela, establishing breastfeeding early on was important. Her oldest son, 17-month-old Prater, was delivered through the birth canal and enjoyed immediate skin-to-skin time with Mom at birth.

“Breastfeeding is best for them, it’s healthier for them,” she said. “The sooner you do it, the easier it will be.”

Daniela’s OB/GYN, Dr. Laura Bradford on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, told her about a new delivery method being used at three Texas Health hospitals (in downtown Fort Worth, Cleburne, and Hurst-Euless-Bedford) called “gentle C-section.” For Moms and babies without complications, the method allows immediate skin-to-skin time in the operating room so that Mom and baby (or in this case, babies) can establish their bond early on.

“It was not as scary,” Daniela said. “When you first go into the operating room, it’s very bright and there’s a lot of stuff that you’ve never seen before. They were really good about explaining everything. I enjoyed that it was all about me and they were there to do whatever I needed.”

Landon came first, at 6 lbs 14 ounces, followed by Sophia, 6 lbs even.

“I was able to breastfeed Sophia right there while they were stitching me up. She was rooting around so we put her on.”

Daniela and husband Ian are now proud parents of three babies under 2 years old! Congrats to the Sanders family!

  1. I had a csection after 35 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing. It wasn't a horrible experience, but it was nothing like that... I was telling some friends earlier that when/if I get pregnant again I am going to talk with a midwife to see what my real chances are of having a natural home water birth labor or going to a birthing center. I will also be going to see a chiropractor to have my body adjusted and realigned. I just wonder if there were things that could've been preventing Levi to come out and I just want to rule everything out before I immediately turn to a c-section. I want to go into labor naturally -rather than selecting a date to go have my baby. I want to experience immediate skin to skin. Not wait 3 hours to see my son. It took me a loooong time to get over the fact that I had a c section. It made me depressed and I cried countless times. I felt like I was not a woman. That my husband picked a horrible wife that couldn't birth children how they should..... It was bad. The list goes on.... But, I've done a lot of growing since then. I'm off track now... Sorry.... If I had to have a c section again, this sounds great!!
