Recently, my family and I took a cruise vacation together. Planning has always been easy for me and my husband, but, as many of you moms know, adding a strong-willed child to the mix can turn things completely topsy-turvy!
All I could think about was how relaxing this trip was going to be. I planned for an easy no-fuss wardrobe. So, I packed our bags with a few swim suits, cover ups, shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops…done! My daughter, however, found this unacceptable.
I explained to her that there was no need to overdo our wardrobe as our destination was the beach. She, in turn, explained to me that she understood where we were going and that it was very important she have more than “a few” things to wear. After all, no celebrity should be caught wearing the same thing twice! (She somehow garnered overnight fame that her father and I weren’t aware of).
Enter the lesson on need versus want.
She and I talked about the difference between buying things we need and things we want and the importance of spending money wisely. True to form, she informed me that she needed more than the two swim suits that I’d packed for her and that she’d saved two gift cards from her birthday and wanted to use them to purchase another suit.
Lesson failed.
I told her that she would indeed have to fund her third swimsuit on her own and that if it were even a penny over her budget, she’d have to consider herself a “twice-worn” celebrity. After buying her suit and happily re-packing her bag, she was ready to go! Everyone had a wonderful time and fortunately the only paparazzi she had to worry about were her mom and dad.
Do any of you moms out there have experiences like this? Please tell me I’m not alone.
