Pre-teen embarrassment

Do boys usually become embarrassed of their parents at 12 years old?

Recently I’ve experienced my son acting a little distant towards me. In the past he was very loving and eager to chat when I come home from work.  Now that he is in junior high that is no longer the case. I am a loving, caring Mom so this is hard for me. Is this normal for a pre-teenager to become more private and keep more to themselves at this age?

My husband's status has not changed. My son will chat with him about anything but with me he has just become more private. I’m not sure if it is because he thinks I won’t understand or if he thinks I am overprotective of him.

I try to give him his privacy but I want to make sure everything is okay in his life. On occasions I check social media pages to make sure nothing is going on that I need to be aware of, such as bulling or older people chatting with him that need not be, I find nothing other than the normal conversations with female friends and other kids that go to his school. I often wonder if other Moms do this, too. I always told myself I when I become a parent I want my kids to be able to come to me with any problems. I don’t want the distant treatment from any of my children.  I just want to be that person my children can connect with at all times with any situation.

Have you experienced this with your pre-teen son or daughter? How do you connect with them?

  1. My 12 year old is the same way with me and he will run 50 feet ahead of me when we are at school events.

We find time to connect by still having date nights, so he and I so we can still connect and talk so he doesn't experience those embarrassing moments in front of his friends.
